This song is a result of a unit I taught on existentialism. It's about existing, or the state of existence, and its relationship to life and the universe, which is also existing right now but in outer space - and perhaps even in inner space as well.
Let me clarify. Circumstantially, each of us has life. It's our own life, notwithstanding everyone else's, and it's designed from a body full of molecules and DNA that solidifies as a person unique unto the design itself. It's a life that we hitherto craft and meticulously maintain throughout the entirety of our existences. Consequently, it's a life that will inevitably end with a death, a death that in actuality results from the failing of one or many vital systems that ironically sustain life itself.
And that is what this song is about, how each of us is alive and how each of us can walk around in this miracle we call space without automatically dying.
Just as life, this song also evolved quite a bit from it's original form, for it too is made of molecules. But unlike life, it will never die because I invented the internet, which as you may be aware sustains molecular transport with binary systems that depend on electricity and magnets (which also won't, strictly speaking, die).
This is the song's first iteration. I conceived (?) of the song as somewhat peppy and upbeat. I think I did this because I'm a happy person.
But while Jeff is a sad person, I think he takes pleasure in making others happy. And therefore when he sent back his take on the tune, I giggled, which in turn, I imagine, made him happy, too.
The problem occurred when I re recorded the tune with my voice, which because it's a bit lower has the propensity to create overwhelming feelings of sadness. But Jeff is immune to that sort of thing because, as I mentioned earlier, Jeff is a sad person.
Here's that track. But be sure to take it easy if you're prone to bouts of melancholia.
Here is the 'final' draft. 'Final' is in quotation marks because I'm already thinking about going back to the original key. Enjoy.
For all I know
Are my neurons slowly dying
Or are they simply realigning
I don’t know
Ohhh. I don’t know
Is there a reason in defining
If I’m laughing or I’m crying
I don’t know
Ohhh. I don’t know.
Well, I don’t know if I should care
If I get there or go
For all I know
Ohhh. For all I know
I stretch my changing mind
Until we both slow down in time
And now we know
Ohhh. And now we know
That there’s nothing in the sky
It’s just a well-designed disguise.
For all I know.
Ohhh. We’re all alone
And now I know that I don’t care
If I get there or go.
For all I know
Ohhh. For all I know
so it’ll never be the same
it’s just a fucked up cosmic game
that I think I know
ohhh. That I think I know
because it means I’ve been supplying
all these babies for the dying
for all I know.
Ohhh. For all I know.
Know. For all I know
Ohhh. For all I know
Love.
